POA Registry
Why having a registry is so important
Phases of Autism (POA) and Abel Kids are developing a volunteer autism registry with the help of parents, who are on the autism spectrum or have children on the spectrum. This is needed for the safety of our children and autistic adults. It will be a valuable tool should Law Enforcement personnel be called. Law Enforcement personnel will have critical information readily available to them. This information will expedite our officers ability to calm the situation, communicate and guide ASD consumers to a safe environment minimizing the risk of escalation and injury. Statistically, children who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum disorder have a tendency to wander. Further search shows that persons with ASD are drawn to and interested in bodies of water. In recent years there has been an increase in autistic individuals having negative encounters with the police due to misunderstandings of the actions of the autistic individual and we would like to change that trajectory. Based on having 5 people in our family with autism, we know the urgency of providing information.
We recognize the sensitivity of this information and the only people that we will share the information with will be the behavior health unit of the Gwinnett County police department.
You will be notified when we receive your information. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
